Lysine, L-Lysine in Skin Care: What You Need to Know

Lysine is an amino acid with significant hydrating and skin-stimulating effects in skin care.

Like all amino acids, lysine is naturally found in the skin at higher concentrations when you are younger. As you age, less of the healthy form of lysine, L-lysine, is available. Instead, a form of lysine known as N-epsilon(carboxymethyl)-lysine is available and accumulates in the collagen (Biochemistry). This contributes to the aged, hardened state of collagen, resulting in aged, dry, brittle skin.

Lysine, L-Lysine: What You Need to Know

Lysine is involved in the hydration of the skin, though applying lysine topically may also enhance collagen production (Journal of Peptide Science, 2012).

Supplementing your skin with the amino acid lysine should provide your skin with more strength and resilience, as well as more supplies it needs to produce optimal levels of collagen and elastin and other structural proteins within your skin.
